NEIGHBORS IN ACTION
Kathrin Meier | Executive Director Neighbors in Action | kmeier@fmhouston.com
Neighbors in Action (NIA) is an extension ministry of First Methodist Houston and operates as a non-profit organization in the Port of Houston. Port Houston is a community located four miles east of Downtown Houston with a population of approximately 5,000. The majority of the residents of Port Houston are Hispanic, and many live below the poverty line. It is plagued by tough issues such as gang violence and prostitution. Many of the children in Port Houston have a parent in jail or other difficult family situation.
NIA’s mission is to help the neighborhood of Port Houston grow spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally, resulting in a neighborhood that is self-sufficient and outreach-focused. NIA is committed to sharing the love, forgiveness and restoring hope that Christ offers to every person and to helping empower people to become all that God created them to be.
Neighbors in Action staff and volunteers offer a variety of programs and projects for the community. In an effort to empower children and families, NIA provides weekly Bible studies, mentorship to children and youth with after school programs and tutoring for students in need of extra educational support. In addition, NIA provides experiences for youth and adults to attend mission trips, participate in service projects, retreats, and emergency aid training. The NIA families also participate in serving the community with their resources and talents.
If you are interested in serving with children and adult programs as a teacher, leader or by providing meals or serving with special events or with special needs, please select the SERVE button at the bottom of this page or visit the Neighbors in Action site.
